    Wildlife-vehicle collisions—Influencing factors, data collection and research methods

    Wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) are caused by the close interaction of human and wildlife habitats worldwide. The large number of globally distributed accidents and the variety of environmental impacts characterize WVCs as intricate and challenging to predict. However, numerous research studies have been conducted to understand the causal relationships between drivers, animals, and the environment. In this paper, 645 publications are reviewed to provide an overview and a wide-ranging knowledge about WVC research. The study gathers the influencing factors on WVCs, systematizes the approaches for data collection, and identifies the main developments in analysis and predicting methods for WVCs. Factors such as the proximity to forest, a gentle topography with sparsely curves, street width, and seasonal differences are common denominators for WVCs - independent of the species -, while traffic volume, the distance to urban areas, or road accompanying infrastructure are not clearly assignable influencing or non-influencing factors. Different ways of data collection are observed, which range from carcass surveys by ecologists or crowdsourcing for species conservation to nearly real-time official reporting by involved parties as a basis for driving safety. Data collection and quality are discussed for their applicability, in particular, regarding the currently used analysing approaches for WVCs. Additionally, the advantages of the rarely employed machine learning approaches are discussed in terms of dynamic WVC risk prediction - including large-scale and temporally unrestricted transferability. These approaches may be helpful for prospective warning and road safety management on a global scale.

In Rahmen einer Bachelorarbeit wurde untersucht, inwiefern die Webseiten bedürfnisgerechte Informationen anbieten.

    Calibration of cast-in Fibre-Bragg-Gratings for internal strain measurements in cast aluminium by using neutron diffraction

    Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) are utilized to function as internal strain sensors during casting, solidification and cooling of two hypoeutectic Al alloys and technically pure Al. In situ neutron diffraction experiments were conducted simultaneously onsite the STRESS-SPEC instrument at the Research-Neutron Source (MLZ) in Garching. The experimental data correlated with structural finite element simulation and X-ray micro tomography (CT) elucidates the mechanisms of this measurement system. The presented work offers a new practical approach to measure in-situ strains during casting of Al alloys by using FBG-based sensors. The FBG strain results correlate with the Al(311) peak obtained by neutron diffraction which is furthermore used for calibration. The examination of interactions between fibres and surrounding cast Al by finite element simulation and CT of the cast specimens enables the application of the sensors for unequivocal strain measurements in castings as well as the characterization of alloys during solidification.

    On the Limits of Scanning Thermal Microscopy of Ultrathin Films

    Heat transfer processes in micro- and nanoscale devices have become more and more important during the last decades. Scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) is an atomic force microscopy (AFM) based method for analyzing local thermal conductivities of layers with thicknesses in the range of several nm to µm. In this work, we investigate ultrathin films of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), copper iodide in zincblende structure (γ-CuI) and some test sample structures fabricated of silicon (Si) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) using SThM. Specifically, we analyze and discuss the influence of the sample topography, the touching angle between probe tip and sample, and the probe tip temperature on the acquired results. In essence, our findings indicate that SThM measurements include artefacts that are not associated with the thermal properties of the film under investigation. We discuss possible ways of influence, as well as the magnitudes involved. Furthermore, we suggest necessary measuring conditions that make qualitative SThM measurements of ultrathin films of h-BN with thicknesses at or below 23 nm possible.

    Effect of intermittent He/D ion irradiations on W nano-fuzz growth over W targets

    The intermittent He/D ion irradiations of polycrystalline W have been performed at the ion energy of 50 eV by changing the time of the single irradiations and the irradiation temperature. All irradiated W specimens have been observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the effect of intermittent He/D ion irradiations on the W fuzz growth has been analyzed. The W fuzz growth over W targets does not show the clear dependence on the intermittent He/D ion irradiations, where the He/D ion fluence of the single irradiations typically varies from 5.0 × 1024 to 2.5 × 1025/m2. However, a slight change in the W surface temperature during the single He ion irradiations significantly affects the W fuzz growth rate. Analysis indicates that W fuzz growth is significantly affected by the total He ion fluence varying from 5.0 × 1024 to 5.0 × 1025/m2 and the irradiation temperature varying from 1100 to 1450 K. This current study will play a crucial role in understanding the W fuzz growth under the periodic He/D ion irradiations of W divertor in fusion reactors, such as ELMs.

    Class of Monotone Kernelized Classifiers on the basis of the Choquet Integral

    The key property of monotone classifiers is that increasing (decreasing) input values lead to increasing (decreasing) the output value. Preserving monotonicity for a classifier typically requires many constraints to be respected by modeling approaches such as artificial intelligence techniques. The type of constraints strongly depends on the modeling assumptions. Of course, for sophisticated models such conditions might be very complex. In this study we present a new family of kernels that we call it Choquet kernels. Henceforth it allows for employing popular kernel‐based methods such as support vector machines. Instead of a naïve approach with exponential computational complexity we propose an equivalent formulation with quadratic time in the number of attributes. Furthermore, since coefficients derived from kernel solutions are not necessarily monotone in the dual form, different approaches are proposed to monotonize coefficients. Finally experiments illustrate beneficial properties of the Choquet kernels.

    Extracting Keywords from Publication Abstracts for an Automated Researcher Recommendation System

    This paper presents an automated keyword assignment system for scientific abstracts. That system is applied to paper abstracts collected in a local publication database and used to drive a researcher recommendation system. Problems like low data volume and missing keywords are discussed. For remediation, training is performed on an extended data set based on large online publication databases. Additionally a closer look at label imbalance in the dataset is taken. Ten multi-label classification algorithms for assigning keywords from a given catalogue to a scientific abstract are compared. The usage of binary relevance as transformation method with LightGBM as classifier yields the best results. Random oversampling before the training phase additionally increases the F1-Score by around 5-6%.

    Energetic Profiles of the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Tests 1 and 2

    Purpose: To analyze the energetic profiles of the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Tests 1 and 2 (YYIR1 and YYIR2). Methods: Intermittent running distance (IR1D and IR2D), time to exhaustion (IR1T and IR2T), and total recovery time between shuttles (IR1R and IR2R) were measured in 10 well-trained male athletes (age 24.4 [2.0] y, height 182 [1] cm, weight 75.8 [7.9] kg). Respiratory gases and blood lactate (BLC) were obtained preexercise, during exercise, and until 15 min postexercise. Metabolic energy, average metabolic power , and energy share (percentage of aerobic [WAER], anaerobic lactic [WBLC], and anaerobic alactic energy system [WPCr]) were calculated using the PCr-La-O2 method. Results: Peak oxygen consumption was possibly higher in YYIR2 (60.3 [5.1] mL·kg-1·min-1) than in YYIR1 (P = .116, 57.7 [4.5] mL·kg-1·min-1, d = -0.58). IR1D, IR1T, and IR1R were very likely higher than IR2D, IR2T, and IR2R, respectively (P < .001, 1876 [391] vs 672 [132] m, d = -2.83; P < .001, 916 [175] vs 304 [57] s, d = -3.03; and P < .001, 460 [100] vs 150 [40] s, d = -2.83). Metabolic energy was most likely lower in YYIR2 than in YYIR1 (P < .001, 493.5 [118.1] vs 984.8 [171.7] kJ, d = 3.24). Average metabolic power was most likely higher in YYIR2 than in YYIR1 (P < .001, 21.5 [1.7] vs 14.5 [2.2] W·kg-1, d = 3.54). When considering aerobic phosphocreatine restoration during breaks between shuttles, WAER (P = .693, 49% [10%] vs 48% [5%], d = -0.16) was similar, WPCr (P = .165, 47% [11%] vs 42% [6%], d = -0.54) possibly higher, and WBLC (P < .001, 4% [1%] vs 10% [3%], d = 1.95) almost certainly lower in YYIR1 than in YYIR2. Conclusions: WAER and WPCr are predominant in YYIR1 and YYIR2 with almost identical WAER. Higher IR1D and IR1T in YYIR1 result in higher metabolic energy but lower average metabolic power and slightly lower peak oxygen consumption. Higher IR1R allows for higher reliance on WPCr in YYIR1, while YYIR2 requires a higher fraction of WBLC.

    Due to the massive data increase in different Internet of Things (IoT) domains such as healthcare IoT and Smart City IoT, Big Data technologies have been emerged as critical analytics tools for analyzing the IoT data. Among the Big Data technologies, data clustering is one of the essential approaches to process the IoT data. However, how to select a suitable clustering algorithm for IoT data is still unclear. Furthermore, since Big Data technology are still in its initial stage for different IoT domains, it is thus valuable to propose and structure the research challenges between Big Data and IoT. Therefore, this article starts by reviewing and comparing the data clustering algorithms that can be applied in IoT datasets, and then extends the discussions to a broader IoT context such as IoT dynamics and IoT mobile networks. Finally, this article identifies a set of research challenges that harvest a research roadmap for the Big Data research in IoT domains. The proposed research roadmap aims at bridging the research gaps between Big Data and various IoT contexts.

    For a successful realization of the energy transition and a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, an integrated view of multiple energy sectors (electricity, heat and mobility) is necessary. The coupling of different energy sectors is seen as an option to achieve the climate goals in a cost-effective way. In this paper, a methodical approach for multi-modal energy system planning and technology impact evaluation is presented. A key feature of the model is a coupled consideration of sectors electricity, heat and mobility. Energy demands, conversion and storage technologies in households, the Commerce, Trade and Services (CTS) area and the industry are modelled employing a bottom-up modelling approach. The model can be used for the calculation of a detailed transition pathway of energy systems taking into account politically defined climate goals. Based on these calculations, in-depth analyses of energy markets as well as transmission and distribution grids can be performed.

    In order to reach the goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a stepwise reduction of energy related greenhouse gas emissions as well as an increase in the share of renewable energies is necessary. For a successful realization of these changes in energy supply, an integrated view of multiple energy sectors is necessary. The coupling of different energy sectors is seen as an option to achieve the climate goals in a cost-effective way. In this paper, a methodical approach for multi-modal energy system planning and technology impact evaluation is presented. A key feature of the model is a coupled consideration of the sectors electricity, heat, fuel and mobility. The modeling framework enables system planners to optimally plan future investments in a detailed transition pathway of the energy system of a country, considering politically defined climate goals. Based on these calculations, in-depth analyses of energy markets as well as electrical transmission and distribution grids can be performed using the presented optimization models. Energy demands, conversion and storage technologies in households, the Commerce, Trade and Services (CTS) area and the industry are modeled employing a bottom-up modeling approach. The results for the optimal planning of the German energy system until 2050 show that the combination of an increased share of renewable energies and the direct electrification of heat and mobility sectors together with the use of synthetic fuels are the main drivers to achieve the climate goals in a cost-efficient way.

    Pflegerische Beziehung im ambulanten Pflegesetting

    Die Beziehungsgestaltung zwischen Pflegenden und pflegebedürftigen Menschen ist ein wichtiger Aspekt der ambulanten Pflege, der bislang kaum erforscht ist. In einer qualitativen Studie wurde die pflegerische Beziehungsgestaltung im deutschen, ambulanten Pflegesetting untersucht. Die Studie orientierte sich an den Prinzipien der Grounded-Theory nach Strauss und Corbin. Acht Interviews mit beruflich Pflegenden und 24 teilnehmende Beobachtungen wurden durchgeführt. Dem Ergebnis zufolge investieren Pflegende zu Beginn in den Beziehungsaufbau, um einen Zugang zum Gegenüber zu erhalten und förderliche sowie hinderliche Einflussfaktoren auf die Beziehung auszubalancieren. Die Ausrichtung der Beziehung auf dieser Ebene ist funktional in enger Anlehnung an pflegerische Tätigkeiten. Ausgehend von einem erfolgreichen Beziehungsaufbau auf der funktionalen Ebene können Pflegende optional die Beziehung auf einer menschlich-privaten Ebene gestalten. Diese ist geprägt von Reziprozität, dem Zeigen von Gefühlen und verstärktem Sich privat involvieren. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass es einer Sensibilisierung der Pflegepraxis für Beziehungsentwicklung bedarf. Es gilt, bereits in der Ausbildung Fähigkeiten zur Reflexion und Abgrenzung zu fördern, damit Pflegende Beziehungen bewusst gestalten lernen.

    The nurse–patient relationship is of great significance for both nurses and patients. The purpose of this article is to gain an understanding of how the individual is constituted through a focus on the execution of the patient’s and nurse’s role in the joint relationship. The article represents a social-constructionist consideration using Kenneth Gergen’s concept of multi-being. Gergen’s notions of the self as a multi-being focuses on the individual’s relational character through former relationships and social interactions. Gergen’s concept is applied onto nurses and patients as individuals to gain an understanding of the broader institutional and social context of each role and their interactions within the nurse–patient relationship. The article focuses on the nurse–patient relationship in general with regard to specific challenges in the home care setting. Various demands and experiences from a myriad of past relationships merge as potential actions for nurses and patients during the forming of a relationship. Nurses as multi-beings see themselves confronted with guidelines and legal conditions, their own as well as the patients’ expectations and the actual possible forming of a relationship in the light of daily nursing care. Patients as multi-beings experience an extended social environment that comprises the nurse–patient relationship while simultaneously having to cope with illness and increasing care dependency within their own homes. Discrepancies can be observed in the relationship with regard to the inherent human qualities, the demands of forming a relationship, and the actual relationship arising due to framework conditions.

    Effects of nicotine on smooth pursuit eye movements in healthy non-smokers

    Rationale The non-selective nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist nicotine has been argued to improve attention via enhanced filtering of irrelevant stimuli. Here, we tested this hypothesis in the context of smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs), an oculomotor function previously shown to improve with nicotine in some but not all studies. Objectives In order to test whether nicotine improves performance particularly when the inhibition of distracting stimuli is required, SPEM was elicited in conditions with or without peripheral distractors. Additionally, different target frequencies were employed in order to parametrically vary general processing demands on the SPEM system. Methods Healthy adult non-smokers (N = 18 females, N = 13 males) completed a horizontal sinusoidal SPEM task at different target frequencies (0.2 Hz, 0.4 Hz, 0.6 Hz) in the presence or absence of peripheral distractors in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over design using a 2 mg nicotine gum. Results Nicotine increased peak pursuit gain relative to placebo (p < .001), but an interaction with distractor condition (p = .001) indicated that this effect was most pronounced in the presence of distractors. Catch-up saccade frequency was reduced by nicotine (p = .01), particularly at higher target frequencies (two-way interaction, p = .04). However, a three-way interaction (p = .006) indicated that the reduction with nicotine was strongest at the highest target frequency (0.6 Hz) only without distractors, whereas in the presence of distractors, it was strongest at 0.4-Hz target frequency. There were no effects of nicotine on subjective state measures. Conclusions Together, these findings support a role of both distractor inhibition and general processing load in the effects of nicotine on smooth pursuit.

    Effects of Nicotine and Atomoxetine on Brain Function During Response Inhibition

    The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist nicotine and the noradrenaline transporter inhibitor atomoxetine are widely studied substances due to their propensity to alleviate cognitive deficits in psychiatric and neurological patients and their beneficial effects on some aspects of cognitive functions in healthy individuals. However, despite growing evidence of acetylcholine-noradrenaline interactions, there are only very few direct comparisons of the two substances. Here, we investigated the effects of nicotine and atomoxetine on response inhibition in the stop-signal task and we characterised the neural correlates of these effects using blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 3T. Nicotine (7 mg dermal patch) and atomoxetine (60 mg per os) were applied to N = 26 young, healthy adults in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over, within-subjects design. BOLD images were collected during a stop-signal task that controlled for infrequency of stop trials. There were no drug effects on behavioural performance or subjective state measures. However, there was a pronounced upregulation of activation in bilateral prefrontal and left parietal cortex following nicotine during successful compared to unsuccessful stop trials. The effect of nicotine on BOLD during failed stop trials was correlated across individuals with a measure of trait impulsivity. Atomoxetine, however, had no discernible effects on BOLD. We conclude that nicotine effects on brain function during inhibitory control are most pronounced in individuals with higher levels of impulsivity. This finding is compatible with previous evidence of nicotine effects on stop-signal task performance in highly impulsive individuals and implicates the nAChR in the neural basis of impulsivity.
