    We report the analysis, design and application of a Talbot interferometer in which the zero and first order beam from a grating are recombined. This interferometer produces fringes of the same period, d, as the master grating or phase mask rather than View the MathML source when the ±1 orders are employed. Experiments using the View the MathML source Talbot interferometer with 193 nm ArF laser illumination to write gratings on polymers by ablation and photosensitive Bragg gratings in fibres are reported.

    The development of autonomous visual guidance for land vehicles at UniBwM is reviewed. An initial breakthrough in performance level was achieved in 1986 by combined differential/integral representations of the road skeleton and the vehicle state in conjunction with recursive estimation techniques (4-D approach). Feedback control laws allowed easy implementation of reactive behavior; by complementing this approach with generic feedforward control-time histories for several mission elements, a capability for mission performance is introduced. Lane changes, tum-offs and handling forks in the road are the most essential such elements; in conjunction with a capability for landmark recognition and digital map reading this allows the autonomous performance of entire missions. Recently developed capabilities of the VaMoRs test vehicle are discussed.

    Experimental Observations of Steady Anodic Vacuum Arcs with Hot Cathode

    Stationary plasma discharges have been investigated in a high vacuum ambient (background gas pressure <10-2 Pa), with an externally heated cathode and a consumable hot evaporating anode. With various anode materials like chromium or copper, and electrode separations between 0.5 and 3 mm, the nonself-sustained discharge operates with DC arc currents in the range of 220 A. The waveform of the arc voltage is strongly influenced by the magnetic field of the cathode heating current, and arc voltages between a minimum of 3 V and a maximum exceeding 100 V have been observed. The voltage-current characteristics (VCC) and the influence of the electrode separation have been measured separately for the minimum and the maximum of the arc voltages and show a different behavior. The metal plasma expands into the ambient vacuum toward the walls of the vacuum vessel and offers a macroparticle free deposition source of thin films. The arc voltage can be varied by external manipulations of the arc discharge, and the mean ion energy of the expanding metal plasma shows a linear dependence of the mean arc voltage

    The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed theoretical study of the behaviour of excitonic transitions which are forbidden in a zero magnetic field but whose oscillator strength increases with the applied field. The calculation utilizes a two parameter excitonic wave function which permits the relative motion term to assume the symmetry of either a prolate or an oblate spheroid should it be energetically favourable to do so. In addition the effect of the coulombic interaction of the electron and hole is treated in a self-consistent manner and the calculation includes enhanced paramagnetic effects at the interface. A detailed study is given of experimental observations [Ribayrol et al., Phys. Rev. B 51 (1995) 7882] in which the behaviour of the e1-hh3 transition is explained in terms of a magnetic field induced type-I–type-II transition in a diluted magnetic semiconductor quantum well system.

    Towards a dynamical theory of magnetic polaron formation

    Calculations have been carried out of the magnetic polaron energies associated with a simple donor-type carrier as a function of its mass. Evaluation of the free energy surfaces show the important role of phonons in magnetic polaron formation. A long-range mechanism for the transfer of spin angular momentum out of the polaron complex is proposed, which can account for spin-diffusion associated with polaron formation.
