    Simulations and measurements of annealed pyrolytic graphite-metal composite baseplates

    We investigated the usability of anisotropic materials as inserts in aluminum-matrix-composite baseplates for typical high performance power semiconductor modules using finite-element simulations and transient plane source measurements. For simulations, several physical modules can be used, which are suitable for different thermal boundary conditions. By comparing different modules and options of heat transfer we found non-isothermal simulations to be closest to reality for temperature distribution at the surface of the heat sink. We optimized the geometry of the graphite inserts for best heat dissipation and based on these results evaluated the thermal resistance of a typical power module using calculation time optimized steady-state simulations. Here we investigated the influence of thermal contact conductance (TCC) between metal matrix and inserts on the heat dissipation. We found improved heat dissipation compared to the plain metal baseplate for a TCC of 200 kW/m2/K and above.To verify the simulations we evaluated cast composite baseplates with two different insert geometries and measured their averaged lateral thermal conductivity using a transient plane source (HotDisk) technique at room temperature. For the composite baseplate we achieved local improvements in heat dissipation compared to the plain metal baseplate.

    This paper summarises two studies, in which measurement and calculation methods to determine the exposure of the general public around GSM and UMTS base stations have been developed and applied to different scenarios. The electromagnetic field variations around the stations in space and time are accounted for by appropriate maximisation techniques. Measurements show a bandwidth of exposures from 0.01% to more than 10% of field strength exposure limits. The distance to the station is not a main influencing factor, whereas the orientation to the main lobe and the sight conditions greatly influence exposure. Several commercially available numerical simulation tools were tested for their applicability on exposure forecast. In line-of-sight scenarios, all programs are able to predict the exposure accurately, whereas in non-line-of-sight situations, free space models overestimate the real exposure by some orders of magnitude.

    Exposure of the General Public to Digital Broadcast Transmitters Compared to Analogue ones

    The terrestrial digital video and audio broadcast are supposed to replace the existing analogue broadcast systems. To determine possible changes of this switchover on the public exposure situation to radio frequency electromagnetic fields, extensive measurements at more than 300 identical points were performed 'before' and accordingly 'after' the switchover. At the point with the highest sum-exposure, only 0.3% of the ICNIRP reference levels for general public exposure (power flux density) was reached. The statistical analysis of both measurement campaigns ('before-after') shows an increase in mean exposure in the centre of the DVB-T starting areas around Nuremberg and Munich, which is mainly based on the increase in the radiated power at the transmitter stations. After developing a simple calculation program based on the ITU-RP.1546, the measured exposure values were compared to calculations. Optimising the results leads to mean deviations of +/-3 dB at about 80% of all points.
